Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author's notes tend to explain this strip's premise. The author opted to show two approaches to deal with the difference in the number of lines between the original strips; the main feature kept Garfield's line in the 1978 third panel in place, where the alternate feature had Jon's 1978 third-panel line stay put.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

So I got this idea to swap the dialogue of the first Garfield strip and the first Square Root of Minus Garfield strip. The toughest part was fitting the flea's new dialogue into a thought bubble originally intended for six words. (Admittedly, one of those words was "neighborhood", but most of the rest were short.)

There was also the difficulty of figuring out what to do when one strip has three bits of dialogue and the other has four; which do I swap with? As you can see, I elected to do both:

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Hello, I'm a flea.
Garfield: Excuse me just a moment.
Jon: Have we dynamite?
Garfield: Feed me.
Flea: Hi, there...I'm Jon Arbuckle. I'm a cartoonist and this is my cat, Garfield.
Garfield: Hi, there. I'm Garfield. I'm a cat. And this is my cartoonist, Jon.
Garfield: Our only thought is to entertain you.
