Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original Garfield strip, 1978 Garfield has heard that a lot has happened since 1978, like disco dying. Garfield doesn't believe the old Garfield until he sees Jon dancing.

Here, '78 Garfield heard that disco died in 1978, but Jon walks in, dancing, holding a LaserDisc. LaserDisc has been introduced in 1978 and was basically the predecessor to DVD. In Southeast Asia, LaserDisc was largely a failure, despite superior audiovisual quality to its competitors.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

LaserDisc was introduced in 1978 and was basically the predecessor to DVD. Despite superior audiovisual quality to its competitors, it was largely a failure (outside of Southeast Asia). When I heard its alternate/original name, Disco-Vision, this popped into my head immediately.
