Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip is essentially "Garfield Plagiarizes Calvin and Hobbes" in all but name, transplanting a wholesale Calvin and Hobbes strip onto a Garfield strip base. Jon is the one speaking Calvin's lines, while Garfield speaks Hobbes's line.

Within the context of the Garfield mythos, it is presumed Jon and Garfield are talking about Jon's maternal grandfather, a character as yet unmentioned in the canonical Garfield mythos, due to the strip's final line bringing up the speaker's mother (Jon's mother being a recurring character in the Garfield mythos) being the one looking into nursing homes. Grandpa Arbuckle from A Garfield Christmas is Jon's paternal grandfather and established to be deceased, and is thus presumed not the person Jon and Garfield were talking about.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Grandpa says the comics were a lot better years ago when newspapers printed them bigger.
Jon: He says comics now are just a bunch of Xeroxed talking heads because there's no space to tell a decent story or to show any action.
Jon: He thinks people should write to their newspapers and complain.
Garfield: Your grandpa takes the funnies pretty seriously.
Jon: Yeah, mom's looking into nursing homes.
