2351: Dialogue Contest - Result
Dialogue Contest - Result |

Explanation[edit | edit source]
This strip essentially takes the "contest" started in 2335: Dialogue Contest and disappoints everyone who "entered" by essentially running the original Garfield strip unaltered, the only edit made being the addition of a fake winner credit below the strip proper. The end result of this strip implies that the material from the second panel was written in a manner not fit of a professional comic strip writer.
It is presumed that the outcome of the "contest" was scripted in advance due to running only sixteen strips after the strip where the "contest" began; production lead time would imply one could not run a proper contest in such a tight timeframe based on how long Square Root of Minus Garfield's strip queue was, then as now. It is for these reasons it is presumed the "deadline" for the "contest", as stated in #2335, was written based on the run date of the original Garfield strip, thus the scripted ending as played out in this strip was implied when that strip first ran. As it is presumed the "winner" is fictional, there likely was no Garfield wristwatch to give away.

The sequel to SRoMG #2335.
I'm not saying this strip reads like it was written by a six-year-old. I'm just saying that... okay, I am saying it reads like it was written by a six-year-old.
Nevertheless, I've always kind of liked this strip. I guess it's because for once, Garfield seems to be laughing with Jon, not at him. Whether that last panel instead represents very carefully hidden sarcasm is open to interpretation.
Original strip: 1986-08-14.
Transcript[edit | edit source]
