I once won an argument about joke structure by taking a joke, completely changing the setting (from a bar to a hair salon) and the gender of the protagonist, without changing the joke itself in any meaningful way (it was about "complimentary" shampoo samples and peanuts, reverse respectively).
Which is why I put this strip to you, the reader, with a question: is this version of the strip (where, I contend, the joke is Garfield is still hungry even after having just eaten) significantly different to the original (where, I contend, the joke is Jon is purposefully misunderstanding Garfield, and receiving a beating for it), even though the only difference is in what Garfield is doing in the first panel? I'd say "yes", in contradiction of my previously mentioned argument, but I can see the obvious counterarguments.
Also, I'm now curious as to what kind of bar would have shampoo samples, and what kind of hair salon would have peanuts (the kind you eat, not the kind you ship things in that seems to have been replaced by bags full of air).
Original strip: 2015-11-17.
Transcript[edit | edit source]
Garfield: BURP
Jon: What's that? You say you're not hungry?
Jon: {clearly attacked by Garfield in between the two panels} Nope, that wasn't it.
