2544: Garfield, With Only One Word Changed

Explanation[edit | edit source]
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
I considered changing Garfield's line in the last panel to "wait a second...", but I thought the idea that Jon attempts to murder Garfield every morning, but Garfield foils him by sleeping in, was, oddly, even funnier than the implication that Jon pulled one over on Garfield verbally. It certainly conforms to the Standard Garfield Joke Logic Standard much more closely.
Discussion question: ignoring pure re-framing, such as found in "Garfield Minus Humour" or "Identity Function Garfield", is this the smallest change to a Garfield strip that changes the joke, or does "Subtly Less Subtle Garfield", or some other strip, hold that title?
Original strip: 2015-03-16.
Transcript[edit | edit source]
Jon: Good night, Garfield.
Garfield: Good night, Jon.
Jon: I'll attempt to, but fail to, kill you in the morning.
Garfield: And I'll attempt to, and succeed at, sleeping in.
Garfield: {in bed} I love routine.
