Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip takes an original Garfield strip where Jon deals with the customer service retention methods of a pizzeria while trying to order one pizza and makes a "order a topping, hold the pizza" joke out of it (mice, for example, seeking cheese in such a fashion); as such, Jon is portrayed as trying to order a whole pepperoni from the pizzeria without actually putting it onto a pizza, a task that would be easier if he were to use a delicatessen instead.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I made this over a year ago and forgot about it. Also, this is only funny if you imagine it in the style of a goofy old sitcom where Garfield turns directly towards the camera, shrugs, and goes "The OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD pizza!" followed by 30 minutes of studio audience laughter as his dead eyes continue to stare right at you, piercing your soul.

Original strip: 2014-08-12.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon is talking into the phone as Garfield sits on the table}
Jon: Hello, Swindell Pizza? I'd like a large pepperoni.
Jon: No, I don't need a pizza, just...
Jon: No, I don't need any pizza with that.
Jon: No, I don't want any pizza, either. Just the pepperoni.
Jon: {angrily} AND JUST WHY WOULD I NEED A PIZZA?!
Garfield: {smiling slyly} The old pizza.
