Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, Jon had bought a turkey -- that is, the bird -- prepared for cooking and eating. He considers leftovers, but realizes that his cat will likely not leave any. Here, he seems to have bought the entire country of Turkey, again, with the purpose of cooking and eating.

Turkey is one of those countries considered to be part of two continents: Europe and Asia. The two parts are separated by the Bosphorus Strait, the Sea of Marmara, and the Strait of the Dardanelles, all in the northwest. This means that Garfield is, as usual, getting the lion's share of the meal.

Dressing, in the context of turkeys, is also called "stuffing", and refers to a mixture of bread, onion, celery, salt, pepper, and herbs and spices traditionally cooked within a turkey. (There is also a sauce called "dressing", or less ambiguously "salad dressing", which is poured over salads or spread in sandwiches.) The Black Sea is a body of water bounded on the south by Turkey, and connected to the Mediterranean Sea by the aforementioned straits and intervening sea.

(As a side note, the date this strip was released was the date of the Brexit vote, a day when Europe was going to be much in the media, and appears to have been chosen specifically as the most Europe-mentioning strip available in the queue.)

This strip was made just for the sake of a pun. No political message is intended.

Original strip: 2004-11-24.
