2678: The End of Garfield, in 2053
The End of Garfield, in 2053 |
Made by: David Morgan-Mar |
Explanation[edit | edit source]
Immediately following #2677, David Morgan-Mar has crafted a theoretical end to Garfield, 75 years to the day of its debut -- of course, his notes are sarcastic, since the "2053" strips' purpose is to satirize Garfield's stagnation. They mention "Early Installment Weirdness", where a work originally differs from what one is used to.
What the annotation didn't note that this strip is actually based on #2417 by MadDogBV, minus the "Thanks for reading!" message in place of the date and Jim Davis' signature. They both mention U.S. Acres, which ended in 1989. Evidently, it could never quite reach the same fervor as Garfield.
The author writes[edit | edit source]
After a long and successful run, the cybernetic organism known as Jim Davis finally decided to pull the plug on his comic strip in the year 2053.
The strip evolved a lot in the intervening 75 years, from the early installment weirdness in which each comic presented a different and never-seen-before series of panels, in which Garfield interacted with other characters, as seen from an anonymous third-party observer's point of view, to the present much-beloved and much-emulated comic format in which Garfield stoically informs the audience directly of his latest hilarious exploits in a meaningfully direct one-on-one narrative.
Despite its never-higher popularity, Davis decided to end the strip on a high, rather than let it decline.
Original strip: 2013-01-17.
