2704: The Most Divisive Strip of Square Root Of Minus Garfield Ever!
The Most Divisive Strip of Square Root Of Minus Garfield Ever! |
Made by: Lubaf |
Explanation[edit | edit source]
This strip replaces Jon's jar of frosting with Marmite, and Garfield eats the Marmite anyway, despite claiming that he prefers Vegemite. Both are popular brands of yeast extract-derived spread in their respective countries; Marmite is a British yeast extract currently made and sold by Unilever's UK branch (alongside Bovril), while Vegemite was invented in Australia, becoming popular in the 1950s after lagging in sales behind Marmite for years since its introduction, and is currently sold by locally-based Bega Cheese (US-based Mondelēz International owned Vegemite at the time this comic ran). In many circles, whichever of these two spreads is "better" is hotly debated; however, they are also considered to have a very strong "love it or hate it" taste, thus making the argument have at least one more side that finds both of these spreads "disgusting". The author (as his notes below explain) remained neutral, having never tasted either of them.
The editor's note refers to Unilever halting sales of their products in Tesco stores, partly due to the pound sterling's declining value, which in turn was brought on by Brexit (the dispute has since been resolved).
The author writes[edit | edit source]
I'm neutral on the whole Marmite/Vegemite thing, having never tasted either, which is, by all accounts, the only way to be neutral on the issue.
