Explanation[edit | edit source]

The first part of the author's notes is essentially a composite of Fido Dido's history between the North American and non-North American markets; the mention of 7-up is a clear reference to his role in non-North American markets (in North American markets, Fido Dido promoted the Slice brand instead due to differences in marketing rights involving 7-up), but also mention his role in the Saturday morning lineups on North American television.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Fido Dido was a popular cartoon character who was used to promote Pepsi and 7-up, and was heavily featured in commercial bumpers during 1990-1995 Saturday Morning Cartoons. He was most prominent for the Garfield hour-long shows. (He was also there for other CBS shows such as Muppet Babies, Pee Wee Herman, Dink the Dinosaur, etc., though people are more likely to remember Garfield first.)

Since then, he's remained a virtual unknown, having fallen out of the public eye. This is an alternate explanation for how there could've been a falling out within the product and the creative process. The truth is most likely duller.

There was a Fido Dido comic, but since its contents aren't available online, and I didn't have any of the material on-hand, I was reduced to taking stills from the YouTube frames. (The second "chomp" occurs when the screen blacks out, which is why it looks slightly off.)

Fun fact - apart from the titular teenage boy, the rest of the silent cast is virtually nameless. I have no idea what the dog's actual name is, but thought it'd be funnier if he was actually named Fido.

Original strips: 1983-09-11, 2007-07-21.
