Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip takes an original Garfield strip involving Jon mistaking a toilet paper roll for Garfield's Christmas list and slaps the face of Richard Nixon onto Garfield's body, then rewords the dialogue to turn Garfield's Christmas list into Nixon's list of major political opponents. The initial list, linked to within the author's notes, consisted of just twenty names, although a much longer version of the list better fit for being alluded to in this strip came later. The author's notes also makes an allusion to the 18½-minute gap on one of Nixon's audio tapes that ultimately became part of the Watergate scandal that ultimately brought down the Nixon administration, culminating in Nixon's resignation; it is unknown just how one could potentially create the half-pixel necessary to literally complete an 18½-pixel gap.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

By way of explanation. I'd have put more effort into panel 3, but then I realized an eighteen-and-a-half pixel gap would be the perfect way to end the strip.

Original strip: 1995-12-08.
