Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip essentially corrected a clash in the strip's continuity. The 1984 original strip, the primary base for this strip, mentioned Jon's parents not having left the farm since 1953; this is at odds with the 1979-09-03 strip, which implied Jon's parents having gone on vacation for a week, thus leaving the farm, being the reason Nermal was brought to Jon's. The 1988 strip was used to source the "79", that strip being about expiration dates with at least one thing inside Jon's refrigerator having such an expiration date.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

In Nermal's first appearance in the comic strip, Jon mentions Mom and Dad going on vacation for a week.

Original strips: 1979-09-03, 1984-11-27, 1988-09-20.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Your visit is such a surprise, Mom. When's the last time you and Dad went out?
Jon's mom: We haven't been off the farm since '79.
Garfield: I don't believe that.
Jon's Dad: Good heavens! What's this?
Jon: That's an indoor toilet, Dad.
Jon's Dad: WOO-HA! Ain't science somethin'?
Garfield: Now I believe it.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

It is presumed the author did not intend to actually credit 1979-09-03, as the remnant line from the old original strip crediting system does not include that date; this may be due to the process used to transition to the current crediting system having taken all of the dates linked in the author's notes and not just those from the old crediting system.
