2907: Jonstown
Jonstown |
Made by: Jason Tank |
Explanation[edit | edit source]
This strip takes an original Garfield strip where Jon and Garfield were down to sucking soy sauce packets and reworked it to refer to the infamous Jonestown incident, including making reference to a common misconception about the event in the author's notes. The title is a pun on the settlement where the namesake incident took place.
Contrary to the implied implications, any unopened drink packet still extant from the Jonestown site would be no more or less dangerous than any other expired packets of the same brand and flavor manufactured around the same time (it is still not recommended for anyone try this at home); the poisoning of the drink used in the Jonestown incident was done during the preparation process, and the poison would not have been found in unopened packets.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
Kool-Aid had nothing to do with Jonestown. Flavor Aid was actually used, but Kool-Aid got the expression. Go figure.
Original strip: 2016-07-19.
Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: I think I should probably go grocery shopping.
Garfield: I agree wholeheartedly.
{Jon and Garfield both drink from their packets}
