Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip is an attempt to correct a perceived mistake involving the color of the pancake mix. Unlike 273: Night Garfield, which the strip's author cited as inspiration, it cannot be confirmed that the original strip actually had a mistake, as the coloration that had appeared on colorized prints on online archives could very well be the official colorists' perception of the coloration of pancake mix.

Yet another alternative perception could imply that, while author's presumption of an error on the colorists' part to be accurate, that the colorists themselves weren't aware that the stove was supposed to be off and thus colored the pancake mix as if it were the finished side of a half-cooked pancake.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Unless Jon was using a chocolate-flavoured pancake mix, the colour just looked wrong.

Inspired by #273.

Original strip: 1986-01-18.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: And now the world-class pancake flipper will demonstrate his skill.
Garfield: Pardon my ignorance, Mr. World-class Pancake Flipper, but shouldn't the stove be turned on first?
{Jon has pancake mix all over his face}
