Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original strip from 2005-01-15, Jon's musings are followed by Garfield speculating that it happened while they were taking their nap. Jon was, of course, not shot. This is the strip processed by Dan Walsh for January 15, 2002.

Garfield's image and thought balloon comes from the Garfield strip for 2002-05-02, in which a weary Jon wants Evelyn to say she'll go out with him; when she is implied to have, he wants confirmation that she's not just saying that... only to find out that she is.

Here, Jon is shot at from above the strip. The border around the first panel protects him, but by the time of the second panel, it's not there, and the bullet finds its mark in Jon's head. Garfield's comment then becomes darkly literal.

The strip's title, in addition to being a rephrasing of Garfield's line in the original strip, is likely a reference to the song Hey Man, Nice Shot by the band Filter.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

That middle panel, always without a border, it is not only a bad idea, it can also be quite dangerous.

Original strip: 2002-05-02. Based on original Garfield Minus Garfield: 2002-01-15.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

SFX: ping! {A stone or bullet bounces off the top of the comic panel border}
Jon: I thought I was going to have fun today.
SFX: thunk!! {The next shot enters the middle panel, since it has no border, and pierces Jon through the head}
Garfield: Nice shot, Evelyn!
