In this universe, Garfield ISN'T a mass-murderer of aquatic animals.
You ever notice how most goldfish die LONG before said seven years? That's because goldfish aren't actually NEARLY as low-maintenance as most people think. You need to keep the water a consistent temperature, make sure the water is filtered correctly... basically all stuff that you need a full-fledged fishtank to do, not a tiny bowl! If anything the bowl should only be used as temporary storage. Said fishtank would also more than likely prevent Garfield from eating the fish.
That said, the life of a fish that was improperly cared for would still be a lot longer than two minutes. But then again, this IS Jon Arbuckle we're talking about...
Also, I changed the punctuation a bit. That face in panel one definitely is not an exclamation mark face.
