Explanation[edit | edit source]
The Matrix is a cyberpunk media franchise created by the Wachowskis, starting with a 1999 movie. The franchise takes place during the technological fall of humanity, with sentient AI farming humans as a power source by keeping them prisoner in the Matrix, a simulated version of reality from before the AI takeover. The movies that make up the primary series follows humans freeing themselves from the Matrix and fighting back against the system that imprisoned them to begin with, with two primary characters being Thomas Anderson aka Neo (played by Keanu Reeves) and Morpheus (played by Laurence Fishburne).
This strip edits the 1978-10-22 strip to make Garfield look like Neo (who goes by Anderson here), and Jon look like Morpheus. According to the author's notes, inspiration came from how the pill Jon is trying to feed Garfield in the original strip is already red, and in the 1999 movie that started the Matrix franchise, Morpheus uses a red pill and a blue pill to give Neo the choice of fleeing to the real world or staying in the Matrix, respectively. This edit even uses a title card for Sunday strips from Garfield's early days, with the following panel showing Garfield as Neo, Jon as Morpheus, Odie as Cypher/Mr. Reagan (played by Joe Pantoliano), and Lyman as DuJour (played by Ada Nicodemou).
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
The pill in the original comic was red so this had to happen sooner or later.
Original strips: 1978-10-22, 1981-07-05, 1981-12-18.
