Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

On page 30 of Garfield at 25: In Dog Years I'd Be Dead, Jim Davis (presumably jokingly) claims to have written the 1980-03-19 Garfield strip in his underwear*. I thought this would make for a good "I ate your dinner"-style final panel.

In relation to the original strip, Garfield shouldn't worry. Sure, Malala Yousafzai won her Nobel Peace Prize at 17, and Lawrence Bragg won his Nobel Physics Prize for work he did at 23, and all of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was recorded when Paul McCartney was 24, and James Dean, Buddy Holly, Jeanne d'Arc and Charlotte Corday all lived the entire lives for which they became famous and died before turning 25; but on the other hand, Mozart's first really good opera didn't premiere until he was 26.

*I suppose it's more likely than not he was in his underwear, just most probable that he was wearing other clothes as well.

Original strips: 2003-06-10, with help from SRoMG #503.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Garfield: 25 years on this planet, and what have I accomplished?
Garfield: Ab-so-lutely NOTHING!
Jim Davis: I wrote this in my underwear

Trivia[edit | edit source]

The set of original strip credits done in the current crediting system lists 1980-03-19 as a formal original strip credit; this was presumably unintentional, a result of the translation of the old crediting system seeing the link to that strip in the author's notes proper and mistaking that for a strip credit along with the intended credits.
