3278: Orchidectomy Chapter III
Orchidectomy Chapter III |
Made by: JLH |
Explanation[edit | edit source]
This strip appears to change the context of who got the stitches by changing one word in the second panel; the author also opted to change the procedure being done in the first panel (much like in the author's earlier strips 3155: Orchidectomy Chapter I and 3241: Orchidectomy Chapter II), as the original Garfield strip talked about declawing rather than this strip's neutering. The change in context in the second panel could imply that anyone, such as a female veterinarian (Liz or otherwise) or even Jon himself, could've been given stitches as a result of what happened at the veterinarian's office.
It is unknown whether or not the original strip made a mistake with its pronoun choice; the original strip was prior to Liz's introduction into Garfield proper (and even if one takes predecessor strip Jon into account, Liz was not a veterinarian during the run of that strip; this interpretation was exploited in the author's notes of the later 5433: When Jon Really Met Liz), hence the possibility Jon may have indeed taken Garfield to a male veterinarian that time around, said male veterinarian being implied to be the one who got the stitches in the original strip's context.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
The original strip ruins the joke by having Jon say "his" stitches. Nothing a little cut and paste can't fix (though we shouldn't say "fix" around Garfield, shh).
Original strip: 1978-10-20.
