Explanation[edit | edit source]

Mostly explained in the author's note.

The title comes from the King James Version rendering of The Book of Luke, chapter 1, verse 20, in which the angel Gabriel -- same name as the cat -- tells Zechariah the priest that he will be dumb, i.e., "unable to speak", not "unintelligent", for not believing the angel's words that he and his wife, both old, would have a son. This dumbness lasted until he named his child, John, at the baby's circumcision.

Oh look! It's another Garfield & Friends episode that was based on a strip gag. (Or is it the other way around...?) In the short "The Genuine Article" Garfield comes across Gabriel, a fat, lazy, lasagna-eating cat who likes to kick a dog, Ollie, off the table. Considerable hijinks ensue, getting remarkably meta at times.

Here I have placed the original(ish) thought balloons over screenshots from the episode. (Available on YouTube!)

Let's hope the editor spaces this one out a bit from my last, identical in premise, submission. I'm too lazy to hold on to it.

Original strip: 2008-04-21.
