Explanation[edit | edit source]
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
By changing a single word in the first (ever) panel of Garfield ("cat" to "client"), and removing the final panel, I may have single-handedly changed the entire dynamic of the Jon/Garfield relationship so that it now makes sense:
- We know that Garfield can talk to Jon, and Jon can understand what Garfield thinks.
- Garfield lacks opposable thumbs (because he's a cat).
- Jon is a stay-at-home cartoonist.
- Therefore, Jon is clearly Garfield's ghost-cartoon-writer... of Garfield!
- Garfield makes unreasonable demands of Jon, and Jon usually accepts. Why? Because Garfield is paying Jon.
- Also, where does Garfield get the money to pay Jon? Why that's simple: it's been well-established that Garfield is a... fat cat! (Bad pun, sorry.)
Original strip: 1978-06-19.
