Explanation[edit | edit source]
This comic is another reference to Sesame Street. To break the references down:
- Sesame Street is well known for featuring Muppet characters; thus, Arlene and Odie are represented by hand puppets (taken from the title panel of another strip).
- Most puppet-related media in general will often use such devices as a wall, a stage, or the like to mask the puppeteers, as alluded to by the author's notes. In particular, many Muppet-centric segments, particularly those with Kermit the Frog, take place behind or on a distinct brick wall.
- The "or" of the title is a reference to "Can You Tell Me How to Get to Sesame Street?", the show's enduring theme song.
- Finally, the transcript makes reference to Sesame Street's often elaborate insert segments.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
I figured that since the characters in Garfield are behind tables, counters, and fences half the time, it makes logical sense that they may as well be puppets. I actually had this idea for a while, but was busy with other things... well, not really...
Original strip: 2014-02-13. The puppets are taken from 2002-06-09.
Transcript[edit | edit source]
Arlene hand puppet {sitting behind a fence}: Sigh
{Odie hand puppet enters from stage left, coming to a rest next to Arlene}
Arlene hand puppet: I take it Garfield isn't coming
Odie hand puppet {reading from a sheet of paper}: "Meow"
{Cuts away to a vexingly strange segment featuring Jon Arbuckle and some mice singing about the letter S, thankfully not shown}
