Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip appears to have Garfield actually being nice to Nermal for a change, dressing him up as Mickey Mouse and promising to introduce him to some of his friends. In reality, Garfield is up to his old tricks and attempting to send Nermal into a copyright trap, as Garfield's "friends" are the actual Mickey Mouse and his lawyer, replacing the unpleasant characters from the 1989 Garfield strip; the lawyer himself is drawn from the 1991 Garfield strip, where Mickey replaces the dog from that strip and the sign altered accordingly, the combination of which conveys Disney's aggressive stance toward unauthorized usage of their properties.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

I guess this is my first "real" SRoMG. I had the idea for this when I saw SRoMG #805, and wondered why Nermal was dressed as Mickey. I quickly realized the joke that Jim had missed, since there's a particular group of people who would REALLY hate Nermal dressing as one of their characters.

Garfield mentions lawyers occasionally, but only had one actually appear in the strip once. Luckily for me, this particular lawyer happened to be standing next to a sign, which saved me the trouble of figuring out how to convey that he worked for Disney.

Original strips: 1989-03-26, 1991-02-19.
