Explanation[edit | edit source]
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
The original strip made it obvious Lyman is the one speaking, but if we have the speech bubble point to Garfield, how do we even know if Lyman is using ventriloquism or Garfield is really talking and Lyman just happens to be there? What did Jim Davis had in mind when he made this strip? We'll never know.
Original strip: 1979-03-22.
Transcript[edit | edit source]
{Jon dangles a treat above Garfield's head}
Jon: Speak, Garfield, speak
{Garfield speaks, much to Jon's shock}
Garfield: Why, of course, Jon. Is there any particular topic on which you'd like to converse?
{Jon turns around and flap his lips as Garfield smiles to Lyman behind him}
