Explanation[edit | edit source]

Anorexia is an eating disorder in which the sufferer perceives themselves to be, or in danger of being, overweight, even though outside observers may find them within the normal range or underweight, even dangerously so.

The first panel of this strip is taken from a strip in which Garfield is convinced by the scale to weigh himself; the edit to the panel slims him down.

In the second panel, Garfield originally said, "Rats," as he used up his eating energy just getting to the dish; here, his thought bubble is occupied by an ellipsis; perhaps he has a mental block against eating at this time.

The last panel's Garfield was lifted from an imagine spot in which he imagined himself thin... overly so, so as to justify eating more. His dialogue came from a strip where he tells us why he hates Nermal (bold indicates the part that was used): "He reminds me I'm so old, fat, and ugly."

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Garfield is a comic with so many fat jokes, that when you make the fat cat skinny, it becomes somewhat sinister and tragic.

Original strips: 1979-07-07, 1981-09-01, 1983-09-19, 1987-05-23.
