This strip refers to the practice of Combination Embossing (that is, layering on a print in such a way that the card is shaped like the image meant to be conveyed) trading cards and then spraying metallic substances (frequently, gold or silver) to make them more "desirable". See, for example, this page about a 1965 set of such cards.

Curiously, despite the typical webcomic author's endless imagination for Filler Strip ideas, very few webcomics have used this particular variety of filler episode - the most notable among those few being Sluggy Freelance and 8-Bit Theater.
