3685: Don't Kid Yourself
Don't Kid Yourself |

Explanation[edit | edit source]
This strip explains how the age gate that was in place on garfield.com at the time this strip was initially made worked; the age gate had three options, "I am a dog", "I am a human KID", and "I am a human ADULT", stating that access would be denied to dogs. Only the last of those three, the human adult option, allowed the user to access the main garfield.com website; the first of those options, the dog option, brought up an "Access Denied" panel and an option to try again. This strip explains what happened when someone clicked the human kid option, namely that it automatically redirected the user to the website's children's section, Professor Garfield, and placed a cookie in the user's settings that would remember the selection made at the age gate to automatically bring the user back to the children's section every subsequent visit to the site.
The garfield.com website was dismantled on 2020-06-19, including the Professor Garfield section; only the main domain was redirected to the Nickelodeon website, with the Professor Garfield section's domain breaking completely. Archives of the garfield.com site taken as late as 2020-06-15 preserve the age gate, but archives from what turned out to be the website's final three days do not include the age gate, implying that the age gate may have been dismantled a few days before the site itself.

One thing I absolutely hate about the Garfield site is: if you click "I am a human KID" when it asks if you're a dog, it instantly sends you to the Professor Garfield site every time you try to visit the actual site. [It places a cookie named 'age-gated' in the user's browser, in case you were wondering. -Ed]
Original strip: 2016-12-06.
