3753: Jai Hodie

Explanation[edit | edit source]
This strip partially flips the premise of the original Garfield strip, in that Garfield's response to being asked about his favorite film is one perceived to actually have a happy ending, thus changing the original's Old Yeller (a film well-known to have a sad ending) to Slumdog Millionaire. The final panel is unchanged; this makes the premise-flip only a partial one, as a fully-flipped premise would've implied Garfield to think Slumdog Millionaire to have had a sad ending.
The first sentence of the author's notes lists previous examples of changing the film (or, in some cases, episode of a television show) Garfield mention but otherwise maintaining the original strip's premise; the author claimed there had been four previous examples but is implied to have linked five (#1532, #2058, #2236, #2463, #2579), with an editor's note stepping in to correct the figure to six and add an additional link the author had missed. Another editor's note was thrown in at the end of the author's notes; it is difficult to discern what the first sentence of that editor's note refers to, but the second sentence, concerning the word flow in the first panel--a perceived flaw of the original Garfield strip--would eventually see a follow-up in the form of 3861: My all-time favourite strip?.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
Since we've seen four [six -Ed] different misanthropic Garfield strips, I thought, "Why not have him name a movie with a legitimately happy ending?". Naturally, Slumdog Millionaire was the first one that came to mind.
[1. I couldn't find any submissions with the word 'stokes' in, so one with 'happy ending' in had to substitute.
2. Wouldn't 'all-time favorite film' be the much more natural wording? -Ed]
Original strip: 1983-04-25.
