Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip pokes fun at a perceived coloring error from the original strip, in which the road is colored green and the grass is colored blue; the original strip had Garfield demand Jon mow the lawn upon seeing the window full of grass. This strip changes the punchline to poke fun at Kentucky's moniker as the "Bluegrass State", bluegrass being an actual type of grass albeit not actually colored blue; Kentucky is a neighboring state to the original Garfield strip's setting of Indiana.

The perceived coloring error appears to have been made at an official level, as it appeared on the former garfield.com strip archive prior to its takedown (preserved on the Garfield wiki on Fandom here). An editor's note brought up the now-busted "images.ucomics.com" domain, where the colors were the same as those on garfield.com (and still are on its still-active secure-domain mirror); Square Root of Minus Garfield itself would use now-busted "images.ucomics.com" domain roughly between the garfield.com takedown and the "images.ucomics.com" domain busting after which it would switch to the GoComics site for crediting. GoComics itself did its own colorization job on the original strip, and their colorization colors the grass green and the road gray as it realistically would be.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Another coloring mistake. Why is the grass blue and the road green?*
