Explanation[edit | edit source]
This strip essentially takes the black-and-white version of the original Garfield strip and reverts the dialogue to that of the Jon strip that was recycled into the Garfield strip. This, in turn, essentially undoes the name change given to the dog in the transition between Jon and Garfield.
It is unknown the exact reason why this particular name change occurred; the explanation of the later 5723: Garfield Odie, Jon Spot goes into further detail over the two prominent theories surrounding the name change.
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
[Two very similar strips were submitted in quick succession by two contributors - the image shown above is a mix of the two. Matthew Prower's author's note:]
Back when this strip wasn't available nationwide (watch this Quinton Reviews video to get up to speed), Odie was called Spot. I assume Jim Davis changed because it was too common or something.
[...and Kokonut's:]
Reconverting a Garfield strip into its original Jon (recently unearthed 1976-78 pre-Garfield Garfield) strip was the obvious thing to do.
Original Jon strip: 1977-03-05.
Original strip: 1978-08-15.
