Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original 2006 strip, Jon observes that he's going to have to change his socks more often, now that having a girlfriend has made him more aware of how things smell.

In the original 1984 strip, Jon finds that he's not as hardened to the fact that pets will be around food as he thought when Garfield retrieves his stripe from it, thus giving impetus for him to throw his food away.

Mashing them up seems to bring us back to the message of the 2006 strip, only directed at his food, perhaps saying that some of the food he used to find acceptable to eat no longer smells good enough now that there will be a woman around.
