Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original 1984 strip, Garfield stomping on his bed's occupant was a mistake, in that it wasn't Odie, but his French bread and olive collection, as recalled when Garfield saw Odie standing nearby. In the edit, Garfield has stomped Odie bloody, knocking his nose off; the image of Odie standing there was used in a tribute panel.

In the original 1980 strip, Jon has forbidden Garfield from eating chicken, as he might choke on the bones; Garfield shows little reaction, and proceeds to scarf down a nearby pile of hamburgers. In the context of this edit, one could wonder if the meat in the hamburgers is Odie, but it could just be that Garfield's gluttony in the face of Odie's death should have been more restrained, in Jon's view.

The author writes[edit | edit source]

While looking for the first appearance of Odie in Garfield comics, I stumbled on the perfect ending to this one. Originally it was just going to end with a super-wide B&W Odie tribute panel.

Original strips: 1980-12-14, 1984-05-06.
