Explanation[edit | edit source]

Almost everything is explained in the author's note, but what would it mean? In both cases, Garfield is saying, in a roundabout way, that the tie is only suitable for the severely obese, as 300 pounds alone is generally considered to put one in that range, never mind on top of one's current weight. The difference with this edit is that, as the tie is now narrower, Jon wouldn't need to be as wide himself as in the original strip to make the tie work, and probably wouldn't even need to gain 300 pounds for that goal.

The author writes[edit | edit source]

I only recently stumbled upon Square Root Of Minus Garfield. Being an xkcd fan, I fell in love with some of the more mathematically inclined spoofs quickly. When I realised that anyone could contribute a strip, I decided I couldn't resist.

At a loss for a place to begin, I decided to start with the strip that was published on my birthday: the 1989-05-31 strip. The gag was about Jon wearing a tie that was too wide for him; the inspiration flowed naturally from there.

My original idea was to widen or narrow the entire strip, but I decided it would be more effective just to make Jon 50% narrower; it also gives the dialogue a whole new meaning. It was a tedious process, but I managed to make it look good.

Original strip: 1989-05-31.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Jon: Do you think this tie is too wide, Garfield?
Garfield: Absolutely not.
Garfield: However, you do need to gain about 300 pounds.
