Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

One of my favourite Garfield strips as a kid was the one where Odie's more sophisticated side was revealed. I rediscovered it by accident years later, just as the Garfield Pipe meme was taking off - it didn't occur to me until much later still that the two could be combined in this manner.

Why would Odie not want to let Garfield or Jon know he's smart, anyway? Does he just not want them to feel bad for being dumber than he is? Or is he plotting something more sinister...?

Original strips: 1978-07-27, 1989-04-27.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{Jon is reading his newspaper, and reaches over to where his pipe is - or should be}
Jon: Now where could my pipe be?
{Odie is sat in an armchair, in front of the TV, wearing a dressing gown, with a pair of glasses and a copy of War and Peace on the table next to him - and he's smoking Jon's pipe}
TV Announcer: "And now... An evening with Mozart."
