Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Rule 34G: if it exists, no matter how obscure or ill-fitting it is, a Square Root of Minus Garfield comic will reference it. Today, once again, that universal truth becomes slightly more universally true.

UNLOCK! is a series of tabletop card games modeled after the room escape genre, made by a French studio called Space Cowboys. They’re made to be played alone or cooperatively with friends; although I have no one to play with, I still find them great fun to play through again and again.

Original strips: 1989-04-16, 2014-09-01.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{A horizontal card headed G, featuring a picture of Garfield peeking into a kitchen. A gray circle on a cupboard contains the number 5, and another on the fridge contains the number 23} Caption: Jon's not in the kitchen— lucky for you! {A card headed 5, a number from the kitchen scene, featuring a blue puzzle piece and a picture of Garfield holding a rope} Caption: You find a length of rope in the cupboard. Why Jon put it there is anyone's guess, but it's just long enough to reach the top of the refrigerator. {A card headed 23, a number from the kitchen scene, featuring a red puzzle piece and a close-up of the fridge} Caption: Jon's put the cookie jar on top of the refrigerator where you can't reach it. Or so he hopes... {A card headed 28, taken by combining 5 and 23} Caption {with an unrelated Garfield comic panel in the background}: You tie the rope into a lasso and throw it at the cookie jar. Unfortunately, after a few failures, you realize that with the rope tied so, it's no longer long enough to reach the top of the fridge. The rope's not a bad idea, but you'll have to use it some other way. Your futile attempts have cost you precious time. Second caption: Press the penalty button once. {picture of a calendar showing Monday} {A card headed 40, presumably revealed on a prior occasion, featuring a red puzzle piece and a picture of a rake} Caption: Jon's gardening rake. Weirdly, it reminds you of a grappling hook... {A card headed 45, taken by combining 5 and 40, featuring a blue puzzle piece, indicators to discard cards 5 and 40, and the rope and rake tied together} Caption: It's a DIY grappling hook and rope. And Jon calls you lazy! {A card headed 68, taken by combining 23 and 45, featuring an indicator to discard cards G, 23, and 45} Caption {with a pertinent Garfield comic panel in the background}: Your makeshift grappling hook easily catches the top of the refrigerator. You start to climb up, but your weight causes the whole thing to topple over! THUD! The fridge crushes you. You're lucky you're a cartoon cat; otherwise, you would've lost one of your nine lives for sure! Second caption: Take card 90.
