Explanation[edit | edit source]

As the original author linked in the description, the strip references the 1988 science-fiction horror film, They Live. The film revolves around "Rowdy" Roddy Piper as George Nada (incorrectly named Joe Nada in the strip), who discovers a pair of sunglasses which sees through the illusions placed by extra terrestrials trying to take over the world.

The middle panel references the scene where Nada tries the glasses on for the first time, revealing a seemingly innocent billboard advertising a tech company to contain a subliminal message.

The title (as well as the first part of the author's notes) is derived from a line Piper ad-libbed for the film, "I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I'm all out of gum."

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

...And he's all out of lasagna. (Seriously though, how come nobody else had this idea before now?)

Original strip: 1983-03-03.

Transcript[edit | edit source]
