Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat is a children's cartoon that aired on PBS Kids from 2001-2002, with reruns lasting until 2009, and based on a book by series creator Amy Tan. The series takes place in ancient China and focuses on Sagwa Miao, a young kitten who can write with her tail and serves as a scribe for the magistrate of her hometown. When the series aired on PBS Kids, both stories told in each episode were bridged by a segment called What About You?, where real children discuss topics introduced by Sagwa.
This strip takes the format of one of these segments, where Sagwa seeks to explore how people celebrate their birthdays. However, instead of switching to a child talking about their birthday, it cuts to a Garfield strip (2014-06-19) where Garfield tampers with the calendar in hopes of getting younger on his birthday, only to accidentally de-age himself, Jon, and Odie into babies (with Jon still being able to talk). The punchline is cut off by Sagwa, who becomes uncomfortable and hastily ends the strip with her bat friend, Fu-Fu, who joins her in the real What About You? segments to close them out.
This strip bears a resemblance to strip 3148, which also features a character from a children's show (in the case of 3148, Steve from Blue's Clues) reading the same strip and becoming uncomfortable. Also, during the Garfield strip, the wall color is changed from green to white to match the background of the What About You? segments.
