Shetland sweaters, made with wool from the Shetland Islands, are a popular traditional Ivy garment. In this timeline, Jon's mother made or purchased one for Garfield, which spurred his enthusiasm for the #menswear hobby and WAYWT (What Are You Wearing Today). In keeping with the timeless appeal of these sweaters, younger generation compliments have been added along with menswear jargon ("sprezz" is short for "sprezzatura", "studied carelessness, especially as a characteristic quality or style of art or literature" – Oxford Languages, and "trad" is short for "traditional").
One may question Garfield's choice of a scratchy sweater without an undershirt, but years of being licked by Odie have made him used to rough textures.
Original strips: 1978-08-09, 1978-09-09, 1979-01-10, 1979-06-06.
