Imagine, if you will, that the backdrop of Jim Davis's life was not Indiana, but California, specifically the Bay Area; and that when he created Garfield, he decided to put Jon and Garfield there (specifically in Berkeley because SF & Oakland get all the attention and it needs more love :( ). OK, that's my flimsy set-up for an excuse to indulge in nostalgia that only people who lived in the same place during the same time period would get.
This is my parody/tribute to the KOFY 20 TV "Pet" bumpers from, as it says, around 1990–1995 (though actually Wikipedia says they were used up until 1998, darned if I can remember) before being discontinued when The WB completely took over. As you can see, it was mostly dogs, but there were the occasional cats (and I also saw birds and a goldfish in its bowl). Unfortunately, when KOFY returned to being independent after The WB & UPN merged into The CW, they brought back the Pet bumpers, but they have been all dogs, with the exception of ONE cat in 2016 (at least as far as I can see on YouTube anyway). Also unfortunately, while researching to make sure I was getting my info correct for this long-winded explanation, I learned that KOFY is now the local affiliate of Grit, a digital subchannel focused on westerns, which replaces all its local & syndicated programming. Whether they have dropped the dogs again, I don't know, as I haven't been able to watch it since my family completely dropped cable for streaming. All in all I'm disappointed that one of my favorite local stations not only forgot about us cat lovers, but now not only isn't independent anymore again, but also is focused on a niche audience.
Oh yes, and I know the irony of this being made only out of 1980s comics from the time they were using this design and jingle. But I don't find that one nearly as memorable. No offense to those who do.
Sorry about that wall of text to explain everything, local pride + longtime interest in logos = TL;DR. I hope that Bay Area SRoMGers and readers enjoy this. I hope the rest of you find it interesting enough to maybe check out more Pet logos on YouTube.
Original strips: 1988-05-26, 1989-12-03.
