Explanation[edit | edit source]

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Interpreted version of the 2003 Chinese labor camp SOS letter. The statistic is from the book Made in China: A Prisoner, an SOS Letter, and the Hidden Cost of America's Cheap Goods by Amelia Pang.

With Garfield being a traditionally non-topical comic, the discovery of such a letter in the universe might have an outcome like this, with Jon shocked and Garfield responding with characteristic cynicism. It's also worth noting that the book mentioned a prisoner assembling Homer Simpson slippers in between force-feeding sessions. Is Garfield merchandise made with slave labor? I leave that to other armchair detectives.

Original strips: 1991-07-29, 1992-08-07, 1992-12-17.
