Explanation[edit | edit source]
In the original, Jon is looking for his pipe to smoke while he reads the news, only to find it in Garfield's mouth. Here, he's looking for his smudge filter, a graphics editing tool, presumably to apply to his newspaper, only to find that it's been used on the last panel.
The choice of any kind of filter as a replacement for the pipe may be inspired by the fact that some pipes can take filters.
