In the original strip, Garfield stuck the carrot in Jon's ear. Here, both the carrot and the plate are removed from the third panel. The way the transcript phrases the moment this happens leaves it unknown what happened to them.

Huh, I wonder where the carrot went...

{Jon and Garfield are sitting in front of each other. Between them is a carrot on a plate, which Garfield eyes impassively}
Jon: If you finish your carrot, you may have another
{Garfield locks eyes with Jon; Jon grins cheerfully as Garfield remains impassive}
{Suddenly, without warning, both the carrot and plate vanish, all while Garfield remains motionless. Jon is annoyed}
