Explanation

This strip constructs an Odie-focused take on the "constantly changing"/"pudding pops" running gag using elements from four original Garfield strips. The first panel has Lyman reading the newspaper while Odie looks on, with the second panel seeing Lyman transform into Jon and the third panel see Odie bewildered as to the goings-on; as Odie typically does not have thought bubbles, the "pudding pops" line is absent.

The 1978 strip provided Lyman. The 2001 strip provided Jon and the dialogue. The 2005 strip produced Odie's first-panel pose and the background color, and may or may not be the source of the second-panel pose. The 2007 strip produced Odie's third-panel pose, and may or may not be the source of the second-panel pose.

The fourth character, Lyman, was Odie's original owner; he was written in to give Jon someone to talk with. Davis later realised that Garfield and Jon could "communicate nonverbally", and Lyman was written out.
