Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original strip, the first two panels were dedicated to the homeowner, Sherri, hearing the doorbell and answering the door. She shrieks in the third panel, and her blind date greets her. Sherri screams and yells through the next two panels as her date compliments her and asks what she wants to do. As the date makes a suggestion, the TV station identifies the show, revealing the date to be Godzilla.

This edit cuts out the first two panels, as well as the fourth and fifth. A new first panel includes Garfield turning on the TV; the "SHRIEEEEEEK!" in the second panel is changed to "SHREEEEEEK!" while "Sherri" is changed to "Fiona", the kidnapped princess in the first film; and the name in the last panel is changed to "Shrek" while "town" is changed to "swamp".

Shrek is a media franchise loosely based on a book called Shrek!, by William Steig. It entered the public consciousness via its first film, called Shrek, released in 2001 by Dreamworks. They went on to make: a short 4D film; two more regular movies, Shrek 2 and Shrek 3; and a Christmas television special, all before Square Root of Minus Garfield's first strip was published. A stage musical premiered in SRoMG's early days, followed by Shrek Forever After, a Halloween special, and a couple of spinoff films centered on Puss-in-Boots... all before any SRoMG strip referencing Shrek was published. Given all this, the author's shock at their edit being the first to do so is understandable.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

There's been not one SRoMG Shrek parody strip. Not one. Given Shrek's reputation, it's shocking.

Original strip: 2018-10-28.
