Explanation[edit | edit source]

In the original, the mouse explains that the stump has good acoustics. Here, he mentions "The Mouse That Roared", the title of a 1955 novel by Leonard Wibberley. The story is perhaps better known for its 1959 film adaptation, but it was also adapted for the stage in 1963, a television pilot was produced in 1964 (but not picked up), and another adaptation was broadcast over the radio in 2003 and 2010. The strip title is a quote from the film, at minimum.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

Original strip: 1982-08-12.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

Garfield: All right, whatever you are! Come out of there!
Thing in the stump: RRRR
{It's a mouse}
Garfield: You? A mouse was making all that noise?
Mouse: You ever hear of the mouse that roared?
