Explanation[edit | edit source]

This strip, as constructed by Charles Montpetit, consists of both an apparent-error original strip and a corrected version; Nyperold had also constructed a corrected version as well, the corresponding title and transcript of which was presented in the author's notes below Charles Montpetit's own author's notes. Notably, both authors appear to have different interpretations as to what was was on the burger in the apparent-error strip; Charles Montpetit went with cheese as stated in the author's notes, Nyperold went with mustard as stated in the alternate title.

The reason the original strip is stated to be an apparent-error in the above paragraph and not an outright error can also be chalked up to differing interpretations; the original could present an interpretation that the ketchup bottle was already empty by the time Garfield first got there, while the corrected strip could present an interpretation that Garfield finished off the last of the ketchup that had been in that bottle.

If one were to assume that the apparent-error original strip is indeed an error, the GoComics presentation of this strip is a rare instance of their own colorization being in a way more accurate than the official colorization, in that the GoComics coloring portrayed ketchup on Garfield's burger; most other extant archives still present cheese/mustard coloring on the burger, and garfield.com before it was taken down were not known to have altered the coloration on any official versions of the strip (implying it's still cheese/mustard coloring in at least pre-garfield.com-takedown prints of "Garfield Bigger and Better: His 30th Book").

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

This is yet another installment in the "Fix the colour" series. In this instance, the colourist had originally decided that the giant hamburger was a cheeseburger, with no trace of ketchup in sight—leaving readers to wonder why Garfield had so artfully hidden his condiment consumption, only to rat himself out by handing the empty bottle to Jon.

[The strip image and annotation above are by Charles Montpetit; Nyperold's similar submission, titled "No Matter How They Mustard Their Strength, They Just Couldn't Ketchup", consisted of the corrected strip only, and had the below transcript, with no annotation. -Ed]

{Garfield approaches Jon, carrying a bottle}
Garfield: We're out of ketchup.
{Jon closes one eye and tilts the bottle's open end toward it}
Jon: How did that happen?
{Garfield is holding and eating a hamburger that's a few times his size, with the patty slathered in ketchup. The plate's diameter is slightly greater than the hamburger's radius, but not by enough}
Garfield: I have no idea

[The version of the strip linked in the archive below is already corrected, but the original can be seen here.]

Original strip: 1995-08-26.
