Explanation[edit | edit source]

The ciphered text decodes to 'send an e-mail to penguinofthedeepbluebeak@gmail.com with the subject line "garfield times i" to receive the next clue'.

The author writes:[edit | edit source]

The cryptogram isn't a Caesar cipher. Have fun solving it.

Also, the weird halftone bit looks a bit strange. Imitating it is a bit difficult.

Original strips: 1978-06-20, 1978-06-21.

Transcript[edit | edit source]

{a mouse exits an inverted time portal}
{a man with a moustache who is definitely not Jon Arbuckle places a bunch of toy mice in a box labelled "Toy mice (No live ones)"}
Jon: It's a deal!
{in a room}
Jon: Happy birthday, Garfield. I have a surprise for you
Jon: A rubber mousey!
{Garfield stares at toy mouse}
{The mouse jumps to life and then leaves the panel}
{near a couch}
Jon {off-panel}: A mouse! Get it!
Jon {still off-panel}: Garfield! You didn't even try!
Garfield {not wearing a top hat}: Disregarding the antecedent statement, I decree that the quadrupedal rodent has indeed travelled backwards on the temporal spectrum.
{mouse enters time portal}
{a black box appears with a cryptogram contained within it}
