Explanation[edit | edit source]

This pair of strips essentially came about from their respective authors noticing similarities between the original Garfield strip and 1902: Garfield comic by Skye. Nikumubeki's interpretation takes select panels from the original Garfield strip and drops #1902's dialogue into them, correcting the misspelling of "exercise" along the way; Super Nerd's interpretation is nearly completely unchanged, only altering the final panel with the dialogue of the final panel of #1902.

It is technically unknown how old Skye was at the time of submission of either Nikumubeki's or Super Nerd's strips, as that would require knowing exactly when both those submissions as well as #1902 itself were both submitted, and quite possibly the date of Skye's birthday as well (the possibility of Skye's eleventh birthday coming before #1902 was published cannot be definitively ruled in or out without knowing those details). Regardless of when the two versions of this strip were first submitted, both versions of the strip undoubtedly spent long enough in the queue to render even a lower-bound interpretation of Skye's stated age inaccurate as of the time this strip actually ran (and unlike 4726: A tribute to Skye, there's no "as of submission" admin note attached to the statement; a lower-bound interpretation would be based around the possibility that Skye had submitted #1902 shortly after her tenth birthday); as this strip first debuted more than ten years after #1902's first debut, Skye's twentieth birthday had undoubtedly passed while the strips were still in the queue, and the odds of Skye's twenty-first birthday coming before this pair of strips is greater than the odds of her eleventh birthday coming before #1902's debut.

It's almost as if Jim Davis/the Garfield staff made a tribute to Skye of their own!

[This comic is by Nikumubeki, but Super Nerd also submitted a similar strip:]

{Garfield gleefully wakes up to an alarm clock} Garfield {to Jon in bed}: Wake up, Jon Arbuckle! We have running to do! {Garfield runs enthusiastically with Jon and Garfield limping behind} Garfield: Keep up, guys! Only five more miles! {Garfield says no to a burger, fries, and milkshake} Garfield: No thank you, Jon Arbuckle! I'll have just a sprig of kale! {Garfield gives Pooky to Odie} Garfield: You look lonely, Odie, old pal. Here, take pooky. {Garfield stands on a scale} Scale: Congratulations! You've lost another ten pounds! {Garfield wakes up} Garfield: Woah!! What a nightmare! Copyright text: Jim Davis 8·6 ft. Skye

Super Nerd writes: The original comic's actually pretty good. It uses a variety of strip graphics and covers all of Garfield's characteristics. But I couldn't help but notice the similarities to Skye's SRoMG submission.

It's weird to think Skye's 19 now. I hope she's doing well.
