Explanation[edit | edit source]
This strip is an allusion to the controversies that ultimately resulted in the end of Dilbert as a syndicated newspaper comic strip. The character of The Professor from Doraemon knows the reason why, but Garfield asks him not to tell the Square Root of Minus Garfield readership; Dilbert was dropped by its syndicate and many of the newspapers that had been carrying the strip over racist comments made by its creator Scott Adams, and was ultimately relaunched as the webcomic Dilbert Reborn after the last newspapers still carrying Dilbert carried the last strip sent to the syndicate prior to the syndicate dropping the strip.
The way the strip is set up implies that the author considers Dilbert Reborn to be Fanon Discontinuity, with Dilbert implied to have been fired after the events of the final Dilbert newspaper strip, presumably due to actions similar to those of Scott Adams.
This explanation links to the final Dilbert strip on the basis that the Dilbert fanbase consisted of a wide assortment of innocent people with a wide variety of viewpoints, including those that did not share Scott Adams's viewpoints, and to consider the possibility of the character of Dilbert himself as being distinct from his cartoonist (similar to the author's notes of iToons #682: Not the Brightest Bulbs Out There); the inclusion of said final strip in this explanation is in no way intended to reflect the views of Square Root of Minus Garfield itself, this very wiki, or anybody contributing to this very explanation (the user who created this very wiki article, for example, does not agree with Scott Adams's viewpoints).
The author writes:[edit | edit source]
Original Doraemon comic: Chapter 172 - The 100 Years Later Appendix.
[Presumably a companion piece to #5299 "June 19, 2014 strip but something happens". -Ed]
Original strip: 2013-01-17.
